We are a family of three in transition. We spent years being frugal and are now at a crossroad. We'd like to retire from our day jobs in two years or less. Our retirement goals are to provide our daughter with the best education she desires; travel; and find new careers - perhaps part-time that we really enjoy. I hope to post both "frugal" and "personal finance" information. NOTE: I am not a professional on either subject. My posts are purely entertainment :)

Frugal deeds for the week: We gave up optical insurance this year since we didn't see a difference in the bottom line cost of out of pocket expenses - taken against the Health Saver's Account. So today, my husband and daughter went to one of those get your eyes examined and 2 pairs of glasses for $79 - or something around there. They plan to get an rx for contacts too and then order them on line. Tomorrow, we are taking my dad and husband out to lunch with gift certificates. Next weekend, we are taking my husband our to lunch with a gift certificate for his birthday. Will also be giving him a Barnes and Noble gift card earned from mypoints. Although my daughter's birthday is in early August - I have given her - her some of her birthday gift - $85 in Amazon gift certificates earned from mypoints, swagbucks, and other places. Also earned almost 900 credits on listia.com getting rid of some unwanted stuff. She has already "purchased" 1 item with the credits and has about 1/2 left to "spend". I have a few small tomatoes and banana peppers in my "garden". My daughter has a pet sitting gig next week. It is H.O.T. outside!

This has been a rough week. There were three deaths at work: either current or retired co-workers. It sure takes a toll. On a sunnyier note: I get to see my daughter today - today is the last day of camp :) I have printed off a restaurant.com gift certificate - so we shall be taking her eat immediately after we pick her up. Got a rent check yesterday and a check for being mail decoy. Sadly, oil did hit "our" beach - the one with our (and a whole bunch of other people's) condo. My credits for selling 5 items on listia are just now hitting. I am going to let my daughter spend them for her upcoming birthday. I also got enough swagbucks to cash in for another Amazon $5 gift card. A few more points and I will have enough mypoints for another $10 GC. Here's hoping to a better next week . . . hopefully the markets stablize too.

Yesterday I made a quick run to Kroger. I found Chavrie with Basil and roasted Garlic goat cheese near the deli counter. I received a coupon for the product. I made quesadillas with the cheese - and they were wonderful. I used olive oil in the frying pan, tortilla, added some Chavrie, a little bit of shredded cheddar, 1 slice of roast beef, fresh herbs from my "garden" - topped with another tortilla, turned, browned, and cut into wedges - no leftovers :) My husband is driving my daughter to summer camp (1 week) - and will be staying overnight using hotel points. The camp is over 6 hours away. I sure hope she enjoys it. It is mainly an "academic" camp, but they get some fun time in too.

What a week. We spent the weekend at our beach condo last week and got to enjoy the beautiful beach. Sadly, I am reading that oil has hit the shore in the next town over yesterday. Lots of nice freebies in the mail this week: Clinical Secret, Body wash and more. I listed 5 things on Listia and they all "sold". I am hoping that the consignment store is "taking" items this week so I can continue to declutter. I do plan on rooting some hydrangea this weekend. I have 1 small tomato starting. Lots of small pear - and herbs.

Freebies in the mail today: a can of Rita Monti coffee and a single serve too; coupon for free goat cheese - Cheverie, and a coupon for a free Butterfinger :) I also donated another box of stuff to the Purple Heart yesterday. I need to plant the flowers I got in the mail yesterday - unfortunately, it is raining at the moment. Summer vacation has started and it has started off superbly - I am very proud to say she got straight "A's" this year too. Made another large payment on the HELOC today. Deposited rolled coins with rebate checks. Oh, and I want to list a few more things on listia. Junque to treasure - and all that :)

More Frugal Deeds last week: I finally got around to using some of the free trades TD-Ameritrade gifted me to go electronic. I rounded up shares, so I purchased a few shares of 3 stocks in our account and then I sent myself some of the money left in the sweep account to pay toward the HELOC. Also today, I plan to stop by Wal-Mart on my way to do errands with my daughter for a free sundae . . . I believe they are serving sundaes from 11 am - 3 pm. And although our half.com sales have really slowed down, we sold a book this week - so, it will be mailed during the errand route also. I read an article in one of the magazines I receive free - anyway, it was about how easy it is to "start" Hydrangea plants. I will be getting some potting soil and rooting compound and a Hydrangea plant (we have one - I think it is a "White Oak" - I want the pink/purple ones :)- to frugally add Hydrangea plants to weedy open area in the back yard. I have also been spending my listia credits on seeds - so, I have several packages of herb seed and sunflower seeds to plant.

Frugal deeds for the week: Today, I received a nice box of goodies from Kraft: 3 snack sized bags of Wheat Thins, individual packs of Vanilla Latte, a coupon for free Oscar Meyer Deli Meat, and a coupon for a free box of Kraft Mac 'n Cheese. This week, I also received a nice box from Buzzagent - anti-aging foundation, blush, concealer, and under-eye concealer. I also dropped 8 items off for consignment and picked up a check. I found a cheap roundtrip flight to Orlando for my daughter and husband to take a trip this summer - we already have a nice 2 bdrm condo reserved - now for cheap auto and entertainment tickets. My daughter needed a book for class next week - and wanted to run to Barnes and Noble - one call to the library - and the book was on hold for us. We also checked out 3 DVDs. I printed a lot of nice coupons this week. After exercise class tomorrow - I plan to make a run to Kroger. Tomorrow afternoon, we will go to Barnes and Noble and enjoy a B1G1 Frappucino - in addition, we have a few freebie item coupons to use at Victoria's Secret.
